A new angle on knee prosthetics

"Knee prostheses have always come in different sizes but, now, their shape and contour have been redesigned to specifically fit the female anatomy," says Gerald Hayken, MD, chief of orthopaedic surgery at Virtua Memorial Hospital. "Previously, we often shaved away more bone in women than in men to properly fit these devices."

In the past, problems with fit had to do, in part, with the original research data which was comprised of the averaged measurements of 500 male and 500 female knees. Gender specific knee replacements provide a more natural fit because they are customized for women, using measurement data from 1,000 women only.
